More benefits in Melbourne Airport Rail route

Posted: 21 Nov 2020

Melbourne Airport Rail will travel through the Metro Tunnel, providing an under 30-minute trip between Melbourne Airport and the heart of Melbourne’s CBD by train.

The route – agreed by the Australian and Victorian governments – will provide connections to the entire metropolitan and regional networks including the five new inner city stations being delivered as part of Metro Tunnel, trains every 10 minutes, and use the most modern fleet of High Capacity Metro Trains.

Airport services will run via Sunshine Station and the Metro Tunnel to provide seamless transfers to Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong and Gippsland, while providing direct airport transit to Melbourne's key business, tourism, health, and education precincts such as Parkville, St Kilda Road and the CBD.

This means people travelling from 30 train stations across the network, including two of Melbourne’s busiest lines – the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines, will have direct access to Melbourne Airport.

The Australian and Victorian governments have committed $5 billion each to fund this once-in-a-generation project, with construction expected to start in 2022 and a target completion date of 2029 (subject to relevant Victorian and Federal planning, environmental and other government approvals).

Work will now continue to refine the project’s scope; continue community, stakeholder and market engagement; and obtain the relevant planning approvals needed to get shovels in the ground.
